My Son’s First Credit Card Churn

There are many firsts to celebrate in your child’s life, so why not get excited about your child’s first credit card churn. This is not the first time my older son, Nick, applied for travel related credit cards, but it is a first that he applied for two cards on the same day.

The Goal
My son wants to go skiing Park City in February. Of course he prefers to fly and stay for free. Nick’s time is limited during tax season, so he needs to fly into Salt Lake in the morning and be on the slopes that afternoon. If we are able to find a low award available, he will need 25,000 Delta SkyMiles to fly round trip to Utah.

He wants to stay four nights on the mountain at The Canyons at the Hyatt Escala Lodge related post, a category 4 hotel, requiring 15,000 points per night. Fortunately a friend with Ultimate Rewards points will be joining him and using his points for 2 of the 4 nights.

The Credit Cards
At this time Delta is the only airline that flies non-stop from Philly departing in the morning. He received a pre-approved offer for Delta SkyMiles American Express with 40,000 bonus miles after spending $1,000 on the card in the first 3 months with no annual fee for the first year. He applied and was instantly approved.

Nick received another pre-approved offer for the Chase Sapphire Preferred Visa offering 40,000 bonus points after he spends $2,000 in the first 3 months. Again he was instantly approved and I am a proud mama! Nick is looking forward to skiing next winter and traveling for free.
