The current bill for my Citi AAdvantage personal Visa came with the $95 annual fee. So I called the retention department and explained I did not want to pay the annual fee. The representative offered to waive the fee as long as I make 5 purchases with the card in any amount during the next 3 months. In addition I will continue to receive 500 bonus AAvantage miles each billing cycle when I make $500 in purchases through the middle of December. This is from the retention offer I received last year. So I accepted the new offer and plan to keep this credit card another year.
My husband got a different offer when calling to close his account. He was offered 4 additional AAdvantage miles for each dollar spent on the card up to 20,000 bonus miles, but the annual fee was not waived. My husband closed his Citi AAdvantage personal Visa.
Last month I called to close my Citi personal Amex (have the visa, mc and business mc). The rep said “Before I close the account, would you like to move most of your credit line to another account?” Apparently, this is new for Citi’s better customers – they moved 70% of my credit line to the visa card.
